Service On the Mother Road

It was no ordinary Satruday morning for members of the Adrian High School chapter of the Natioanl Honor Society.  After a late evening spent at school for the Fall Festival, students in grades 10-12 that comprised the National Honor Society gather early in the morning to help clean up a small section of the historic Route 66.

Led by officers Bailey Balderaz, Hanna Gruhlkey, Joe Rico, and Anahi Herrera, NHS members gathered early at the school to begin the process of cleaning up the entryway into Adrian.  Students walked up and down the entrance to town collecting trash, tires, and various other debris that could be found along the road.  This was part of their commitment of service to the community of Adrian.  Each year the NHS members discuss and agree to several group service projects that range from cleaning the highways, to singing Christmas Carols at nursing homes and long term care facilities, to building homes with habitat for humanity.  In addition, each student is required to log at least 10 hours of service per year, on their own.  Last year, the students decided to take up the effort to keep our entry way clean.

Indicated by a sign from the state of Texas, the Adrian Chapter has volunteered to spend time each year cleaning up and taking care of our highways.  Though this commitment had lapsed over the years, the students saw the need and had the desire to help revitalize our little town and make sure visitors to Adrian are welcomed with a clean and friendly entryway.  This marks the second consecutive year that students have given their time to help keep our community clean.  In addition, they also plan to meet again in the fall to start cleaning the west side of town.  “Their commitment is truly remarkable.  None of the students gripe or complain.  They just show up and do the work” said Mr. Clifton, advisor to the NHS chapter.  “I’m really proud of them for their commitment and look forward to what the future holds with students like this to lead the way.”

If you are interested in joining them, the chapter plans to gather again on April 1st to begin the process of cleaning the west side of the town’s entryway.  They would love to have community members join as they work to keep Adrian beautiful!
